A practical guide to freight in SE QLD
If you run a business in South East Queensland and you're moving freight regularly — tyres, pallets, parts, finished goods — the difference between an efficient freight setup and an expensive one usually comes down to a few decisions made well. This guide walks through how to think about freight in SE QLD and Northern NSW, what each service level is for, and where the cost levers sit.
The geography you're working with
SE QLD freight revolves around Brisbane. Most cargo enters or exits via:
- The Port of Brisbane — sea freight.
- Brisbane Airport — air freight.
- Major interstate linehaul terminals — Acacia Ridge, Eagle Farm and Wacol.
- Local manufacturing and distribution — concentrated in Archerfield, Acacia Ridge, Rocklea, Wacol, Larapinta, Heathwood, Yatala and Eagle Farm.
From Brisbane, freight radiates out daily to:
- The Gold Coast (M1 corridor)
- Toowoomba and the Western corridor (Warrego)
- The Sunshine Coast and Gympie (Bruce Highway)
- The Wide Bay (Bundaberg, Hervey Bay, Maryborough)
- Northern NSW (Tweed, Ballina, Lismore)
Each lane has its own rhythm, cut-offs and pricing logic. Read the Brisbane guide, Gold Coast guide, Toowoomba guide, Sunshine Coast guide, Wide Bay guide and Northern NSW guide for the lane-by-lane detail.
The six service levels you'll choose from
Every freight job in SE QLD effectively maps onto one of six service levels:
- Hot Shot — dedicated vehicle, direct dispatch, fastest possible. Use when timing is critical.
- Express (Same-Day) — same-day delivery on a consolidated route. Use when same-day matters but not the exact hour.
- General (Overnight) — next-business-day delivery on a consolidated route. The default for routine regional freight.
- Bulk Freight — discounted per-pallet or per-vehicle rates for large consignments.
- Taxi Truck — flexible hourly vehicle hire for multi-stop jobs or short-notice work.
- Permanent Daily Hire — a dedicated vehicle and driver on your account every business day. The right answer for high-volume accounts running scheduled runs.
Match the level to the job, not the other way around. A good freight partner will recommend down where appropriate, not always up.
The four flows most SE QLD businesses run
Almost every freight footprint in SE QLD breaks into four flows:
- Inbound — sea freight, interstate linehaul, manufacturer pickups.
- Outbound distribution — daily restocking of customers, dealers, branches.
- Same-day urgent — Hot Shot and Express for time-critical jobs.
- Returns and reverse logistics — warranty, transfers, aged stock.
Mapping your business onto those four flows is the first step in building a sensible freight plan. The second is choosing which of the six service levels applies to each flow.
The cost levers that actually move the needle
In our experience, three cost levers matter more than anything else:
- Right-sizing service levels. Using Hot Shot for routine restocking is the most common (and expensive) mistake. Default to Express or Overnight; reserve Hot Shot for genuine exceptions.
- Consolidating where possible. Two pallets to the same suburb on the same day should be one job, not two. Two Hot Shots to neighbouring suburbs in the same hour can often be combined.
- Opening an account. Account customers get rate cards, consolidated invoicing, and operational priority. Ad-hoc bookings are convenient but priced for one-offs.
There are smaller levers too — better labelling, cleaner manifesting, earlier bookings — but the big three above account for the majority of savings on a typical SE QLD freight account.
Cross-docking vs warehousing
If you're moving freight through Brisbane without having (or wanting) a local warehouse, cross-docking is often the right answer. Freight arrives at our Archerfield depot, gets sorted, and goes out on the same-day or overnight network without ever going on a rack. Cheaper than a 3PL contract for the right volume profile. Read the cross-docking guide for detail.
Vehicles and equipment
A serious freight network in SE QLD needs:
- Small vans (1-tonne) for Hot Shot and small same-day jobs
- 2-tonne and 4-tonne tail-lift trucks for dealer runs
- 8-tonne, 10-tonne and 12-tonne tail-lift trucks for pallets
- Heavy rigids and semi-trailers for bulk and linehaul
- Cages, dollies and pallet jacks as standard
We run all of the above. Tail-lift coverage is non-negotiable for tyre and pallet freight; if a carrier doesn't have it on every vehicle class, expect delays at receiving docks.
Tracking, POD and operational visibility
You should expect, as a minimum:
- Live tracking from pickup to drop
- Photo POD on delivery
- Manifesting and consolidated invoicing on accounts
- A named operations contact during business hours
- After-hours support for genuine emergencies
Without those, you'll spend more time on the phone chasing jobs than you'll save on freight rates.
How we run it
Ontime Haulers is Australian-owned and based in Archerfield. We run tyre and palletised freight as managed categories, with same-day and overnight networks covering Greater Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Toowoomba, the Sunshine Coast, the Wide Bay and Northern NSW. Account customers get a priced rate card, consolidated invoicing, and a real person on the phone.
