Why tyre freight is its own discipline
Tyres look easy. They're round, they stack, and they don't break in transit. But anyone who has run a tyre warehouse or a dealer network in South East Queensland will tell you that tyre distribution is one of the more demanding categories of palletised freight in Australia. Volumes spike with seasonal weather, fitment bookings are unforgiving, and a single missed drop can cascade into lost workshop revenue all day.
At Ontime Haulers we move tyres into and out of Brisbane every working day — from the Port of Brisbane and Archerfield depots out to dealers across Greater Brisbane, the Gold Coast, the Sunshine Coast, Toowoomba, the Wide Bay and Northern NSW. This guide breaks down how the category actually works and what to look for in a freight partner.
The four flows that make up tyre distribution
Most tyre freight in SE QLD falls into one of four flows:
- Container unpack and warehouse transfer. Sea freight arrives at the Port of Brisbane or via Pinkenba. Containers are devanned at a bonded or company-controlled site and the stock moves on pallets, cages or loose-loaded into a wholesaler's warehouse — often in Archerfield, Acacia Ridge, Wacol or Yatala.
- Wholesaler-to-dealer distribution. This is the daily heartbeat: pallet and part-pallet runs from the wholesaler out to independent tyre shops, mechanical workshops, fleet workshops, dealerships and mobile fitters.
- Hot Shot replenishment. A workshop has a customer in the bay, needs a tyre size they don't have, and needs it now. A dedicated vehicle picks up at the wholesaler and drops at the workshop within a defined window.
- Returns, warranty and aged stock. Tyres flow the other way too — warranty claims, returns of unsold sizes, transfers between branches. This is often neglected, but a clean reverse-logistics process protects margin.
A capable tyre freight partner handles all four flows on the same account, with one point of contact and consistent rate cards.
Service levels that match how tyres actually sell
Tyre freight maps cleanly onto service levels. The trick is matching the right level to the right consignment so you don't overspend on routine stock or under-resource a critical fitment.
- Hot Shot — a dedicated vehicle, direct from pickup to drop. Use for in-bay emergencies, premium-brand requests where the customer is waiting, and high-value performance tyres where margin justifies the freight.
- Express (Same-Day) — booked in the morning, delivered before close of business across Brisbane and the Gold Coast. The workhorse for "we'd like it today" orders.
- General (Overnight) — booked today, delivered next business day to Toowoomba, the Sunshine Coast, Wide Bay and Northern NSW. The most cost-effective option for routine replenishment.
- Bulk Freight — pallet-rate or per-tyre-rate pricing for larger consignments. Used for branch transfers and large fitment-centre orders.
- Permanent Daily Hire — a dedicated vehicle and driver on your account every day. Common for high-volume wholesalers running scheduled metro and regional runs.
Vehicles and equipment that actually work for tyres
Tyres are awkward freight. They cube out a van quickly, they don't always strap cleanly to a pallet, and tail-lift access is non-negotiable at most dealer back docks. We run a fleet that includes:
- 1-tonne vans for small Hot Shot drops
- 2-tonne and 4-tonne tail-lift trucks for dealer runs
- 8-tonne and 12-tonne tail-lift trucks for pallet movements
- B-double and semi-trailer capacity for branch transfers and container work
Cages, dollies and pallet jacks are standard. Drivers are familiar with tyre handling and know to keep loads off bare concrete in wet weather.
What changes by service area
Different parts of SE QLD have different rhythms:
- Brisbane metro and Logan — short-leg, high-frequency runs. Same-day is the default; Hot Shot is on tap.
- Gold Coast — daily runs out of Brisbane via the M1; same-day delivery is realistic for most of the Coast when booked by mid-morning. See our Gold Coast services for the suburb-level breakdown.
- Toowoomba and the Western corridor — overnight is the standard. Hot Shot is available but the freight rate reflects the round trip.
- Sunshine Coast and Gympie — overnight is reliable, with same-day available on request for higher-value consignments.
- Wide Bay (Bundaberg, Hervey Bay, Maryborough) — overnight via the Bruce Highway corridor, with consolidated runs to keep per-pallet pricing competitive.
- Northern NSW — overnight cross-border to Tweed, Ballina, Lismore and Casino. Critical for wholesalers supplying the northern rivers market.
Questions to ask your tyre freight partner
If you're tendering tyre freight or reviewing an incumbent, the questions that separate good carriers from average ones are:
- Do you have tail-lift coverage across every vehicle class, or only the larger trucks?
- Can you handle container devanning at the Port of Brisbane and palletise on the same job?
- What's your standard cut-off for same-day Hot Shot bookings to the Gold Coast?
- Do you scan on pickup and delivery, or only on the manifest?
- How are after-hours and Saturday morning calls handled — is it the same operations team or an answering service?
- Can the freight rate be structured per pallet, per tyre, or per linear metre depending on consignment mix?
How we run tyre distribution
Ontime Haulers runs tyre freight as a managed category, not an ad-hoc service. That means an account manager who understands your stock flow, drivers who are familiar with your dealer network, consistent pricing across service levels, and a live tracking link the customer service team can paste into an email when a workshop is asking where their tyres are.
